We went to the free preview of Troy on base and I enjoyed the movie a lot. I’ll do my best not to ruin it for you. Even if you have already read the Iliad, I imagine this would still be extremely entertaining. Considering the subject matter, I found that I did not have to suspend my disbelief very often. Battles are good, and the CGI provides a huge sense of scale. Criticizing the story seems rather pointless, because it is a tale that continues to stand the test of time. As far as the accuracy to the Iliad is concerned, I cannot comment but I heard quiet mumblings about a few changes.
As a whole, the cast is wonderful. Maybe beautiful works better to describe them. If you are a girl, be prepared for the insane combination of Orlando and Brad. Maggie and Soley appeared quite pleased. Then there is Diane Kruger as Helen. She makes it crystal clear why a war was started over a woman. You’ll also see Borimir alive and kicking in his activities previous to fighting the Cyclops and warding off the Sirens. And if you watched 28 Days Later, Menelaus may look familiar. They all do a wonderful job, but I am not one to judge acting. Orlando speaks a few Legolas-esque lines as Paris. A few scenes had touching dialogue, and a few people may shed some tears.
Most importantly, in the middle of battle, a good one on one fight is worth stopping and forming a break dance circle to watch.
Others in the theater seemed to enjoy the nearly three hour experience. Having to spend no money, I can’t complain. Hopefully I did not spoil anything. I am no film connoisseur, but Troy receives the thumbs up from me. Achilles is ridiculously awesome.
