Winter Quarter 2006 is over. My schedule wasnǃÙt hard. It wasnǃÙt supposed to be hard. It wasnǃÙt easy. It was probably supposed to be easy. HereǃÙs a breakdown of my classes:
Chemistry 142
This is the introductory chemistry course, so all sorts of freshmen probably schooled me. I did fine on the two midterms, so I got a little too confidentǃÓstopped studying, doing homework, or worrying about chemistry in general. This didnǃÙt bode well for the final.
Labs were cool because I had two partners so it made less work for all of us (the labs are made for two people). One weekǃÙs experiment had us stirring a solution and watching it change colors until it was transparent. It was a really cool experiment when I did the same thing with food coloring back in third grade.
It takes like seven seconds to stir sugar into a big thing of iced tea. This part of the experiment was supposed to take half an hour. There were two flasks to mix and our group had three people. Question: WhatǃÙs more boring than stirring something for 30 minutes? Answer: Watching two people stir something for 30 minutes.
AA 210: Statics
This is also known as Physics in Disguise. As a whole, the course was boring. It felt good to go on dates to the library with the textbook and finally understand what the hell was going on. But that good feeling is relative, just like hot dogs tasting awesome if thereǃÙs nothing else to eat.
Lectures were so-so. I wasnǃÙt as bored as some people. For instance, one day I saw a guy take his laptop out to check his bank statement online. Maybe he wasnǃÙt bored; maybe he just had to take care of some important financial matter. Upon closer inspection, his bank statement wasnǃÙt a bank statement at all—he was just checking how many points he had on his Subway Rewards card.
TC 231
Class was interesting enough. My grades reminded me that itǃÙs been years since I took a writing class. I never got anything back saying ǃ?good writing,ǃ? but I did get ǃ?good layoutǃ? often. The two responses negate each other and IǃÙm not happy or sad about the class. I learned way too much about Aerogel. Some people think itǃÙs some material proving that the future is now. ItǃÙs really not that interesting.
I found out that finishing class before noon is nice. I could take a solid nap and wake up with the sun still shining high. More importantly, I found that starting class at 8:30 is terrible. In 10th grade I took zero period. Class started at 6:50. Five days a week. IǃÙll never again be stupid enough to take a class that early. And thatǃÙs how I know IǃÙm learning something in college.
