Pan’s Labyrinth

Best movie I’ve seen in 2007, beating out TV showings of The Last Samurai and Independence Day. Tough standards. It’s the only time I can think of that I watched a foreign film on the big screen. Didn’t manage to catch Crouching Tiger or City of God in theaters. Reading is a lot easier when the text is gigantic. It’s a lot more engrossing being in a different language.

I’m glad it’s not an American movie because it’d probably have Dakota Fanning and I just can’t stand her (She speaks like she’s in her thirties and that weirds me out). But it could be directed by Tim Burton, probably making it the best movie ever. Spanish sounds mad evil coming from the fantasy characters, so I recommend they keep that untranslated for an American version. Enough about an imaginary American version. Go watch the actual Mexican version. From what I barely know, it’s a Mexican film spoken in Spanish from Spain. Chances are: I’m wrong.

I found a few scenes harder to stomach than anything from Apocalypto. But there was so much gore in Apocalypto that you start ignoring it and focusing on more important details, like that in the midst of characters with names like Panther Devourer and Zero Wolf there’s a guy called Hanging Moss. Anyway, it’s some sort of war/fantasy/horror hybrid and you probably won’t end up seeing what you’re expecting. But you’ll probably like it. Here’s the trailer. Please, don’t watch trailers for the first time on YouTube if you have a choice.

P.S. There were like 10,000 high schoolers coming out of another theater playing Stomp the Yard when we entered the lobby. There’s no doubt it’s winning the weekend.

P.S.S. Here’s the 300 teaser. It’s the first one because I can’t find a way to link directly to the second one. If given the choice of watching either Stomp the Yard or the 300 preview, I’m fairly certain it’d be good to choose the latter.
