The Protector
Just watched this a few hours ago. It’s entertaining. But it’s better than the usual “oh it’s not that great but it’s entertaining.” Just don’t expect much of a story. There’s an emphasis on elephants that wasn’t properly captured on the movie poster or in any of the trailers that I saw. The plot is this: Jaa’s elephant gets kidnapped and taken to Sydney so he travels from Thailand to Australia to get it back. If you replaced “Jaa” with “Jim” you’d have Ace Ventura 3: When Nature Calls Again. But the movie is better than I probably just made it sound. One review says the action is “Jaa-dropping.” I can’t really top that. There’s a four-minute scene where Jaa is followed up a spiraling staircase and the camera doesn’t cut the entire time. It would’ve been awesome (it was still pretty good) if I didn’t see…
Children of Men,
which has a seven-minute scene that doesn’t cut away. And that scene is probably the most amazing thing I’ve watched since the aliens blew up the United States. Supposedly, there’s an instance of cgi involved in combining two separate scenes but it’s seamless (just like Radioactive Man! And in Spanish). Ignoring the whole police-state thing, it really captures the feeling of the future a few decades from now. Unlike Minority Report which seemed a little too over the top. Watch Children of Men. It’s worth seeing in theaters. It’s definitely my favorite movie based in England starring a white guy and a black girl, topping 28 Days Later.
