I was planning on saying something like, “I can definitely see why Daniel Day-Lewis won best actor, it’s easily the best performance of the last five years.” The problem is that I looked it up and it’s been four years since I actually saw a movie with a best actor performance. (When Sean Penn won, Bill Murray got burned, and I kept my fingers crossed for Johnny Depp to pull an upset.) Then I was going to say something like, “I can definitely see why Daniel Day-Lewis won best actor, it’s easily the best performance of 2007.” And the problem is that I looked it up and I haven’t actually seen any of the other movies with a best actor nominee. So I don’t really know where to go with this. He’s completely convincing. There Will Be Blood runs about twenty minutes too long, but not to the point of boredom. No Country for Old Men was better, hands down.
On a minutely related note, what happens when two people with hyphenated last names (like Day-Lewis) decide to marry, and the wife wants to keep her last name? Do they do alphabetical order, choose one from each, or just get overwhelmed and stall the wedding until it just never happens? Here are a few answers.
